OSX Mountain Lion: Fixing Wine.

One thing that bugged me with Mountain Lion is that Apple has dropped X11 which has caused all my Wine apps to crash. Luckily there’s an easy way to fix this (unlike Rosetta which still pisses me off) and here’s how you fix it.

This will probably be the shortest post you’ll ever read. Download XQuartz and make ‘em work again.

Thats really all there is too it. Make sure to fetch the latest version to make sure its compatible with Mountain Lion. If you have some difficulties, feel free to drop me a comment and I’ll get back to you.

Wine sure brings back a lot of good memories!

  1. I havent tried this on the Developer Preview 2 actually, but it should work. What kind of errors do you receive? I’ve been having some problems with Cider ports though, both on Mountain Lion and Lion, but pure Wine apps usually works (I use Wineskin).

  2. I need you to write in english in order to understand what you mean properly, although I think I understood most of your message :)

As I said in my last post I haven’t really tried in the latest Developer Preview, but I assume you problem is related to incompatible version of X11 (XQuartz). Iam not completely sure if its supported in DP3 due to some changes, but over at the XQuartz page (http://xquartz.macosforge.org/landing/) it says “For OS X 10.6 or later (including Mountain Lion)” so it should work. First step: Make sure you have the latest version of XQuartz :)

Do you receive any error log on the problem? May be easier to identify the problem – the “wine seems to have crashed” message is very generic.

  3. Sorry I forgot that I was on An English website ^^
    So I
Tried wine skin and it’s working fine. I was using playonmac but it wasn’t working since ML dp2.
    Thx for your answer ;)

  4. Hehe, no problem!
Thats great news, Iam glad to hear! I never really heard of PlayOnMac, but I suppose its based on Wine? I’ve also had some problems with other Wine-based software like Cider. But Wineskin does everything with ease!

  5. Thanks for this post man! This is the only post that pops up in a Google search for Mountain Lion and Wine not working. Quartz is installed, and all the Wine apps are running fine again!
